Does anyone else agree Michael Jackson is underrated when it comes to songwriting?
It seems he’s given credit for singing and dancing but not actually composing and writing his music as such - what about hits like Earth Song and Heal The World? To Dirty Diana? Beat It? Don’t Walk Away? Some hits are particularly poetic, others pure melodic such as Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough…
What are your thoughts? And please, if you disagree just say so WITHOUT giving me a ton of crude and insulting remarks, let’s keep this friendly.

Can someone help me with songwriting?
I love music more than anyone in the world and I adore writing novels and poetry, so songwriting should be easy for me because I can rhyme words easily and I can play three instruments and I sing, but I have trouble writing good songs. I’ve written a few, but none are good enough for my band. I like Taylor Swift’s style, and I need some ideas to write songs about so could anyone help me? And please give a little description, not just "love" but something like "falling in love with someone who doesnt love u back" or something. Thanks so much, may the best answer win!!
Firstly, song lyrics (and poetry) dont have to rhyme.
Songwriting involves lyrics, accompaniment (music), and vocal melody. You need to focus on all of these. Lyrics are easy to write, you can write about anything that you want. The key is the vocal melody, thats what will hit people first. so think of some melodies and then ask yourself what sort of emotion it brings out, then you write your lyrics around that.
What do you think about my songwriting?
Hi! I’m considering a career in music industry. Need your opinion on my songwriting. Here is the material that I’ve written so far:
www.i-music.bplaced.net
These are just GuitarPro midi demos with the vocal part played by an instrument.
There are some rock ballads and electro/hard rock stuff.
These songs are my first endeavors in songwriting. So your opinion on my material and songwriting abilities is greatly appreciated.
Thanx!
Awesome! You should check out http://www.songcrypt.com. If you’re not planning on doing anything with this music maybe you could post it for others to perform.
What subjects do I need to take to become a song-writer?
I would really like to become a song writer, but I have no idea what subjects I would need to take! I’m taking my GSCE’s now, but what would I need to choose for 6th form? I know I need an english but do I take language or literature? Thanks for your help.
Songs usually have two elements, lyrics and music. If you feel the need for formal training, try taking english (language & literature) and music.
However, what you really need to write good songs is a passion for music and some real inspiration. It also helps if you play and instrument that you can accompany yourself on - either guitar or piano are the obvious choices.
Does anybody have any good songwriting ideas?
I want to get into writing music, because I’ve played guitar for a long time, and love it! I’ve tried writing tons of songs in the past, but none are ever relatable to listeners, or don’t make sense, and things like that! Does anybody have any kind of song ideas that you wouldn’t mind me using? I would probably change it a bit, to make it sort of my own..
Instead of just taking someone else’s idea and not giving them a chance to enjoy the results, why don’t we write in partnership?
I have 89 songs left unfinished to tinker with, and would be glad to assist you in "keeping it real" with a general audience with any projects you have as well. My background is as a karaoke host and contest winner, as well as broadcasting in several different music formats. I’m also somewhat of a music historian with a good sized collection. Check my profile.
E-mail me at my profile if you’re interested. Co-writing with a melody writer is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. Two of my finished pieces are in the links below.
Good songwriting tips?
Hi! I’m really into writing songs. And I want some tips on some good songwriting. I know to write from my heart. Thank you!
Hi,
You’re correct, the best songs come from the heart but after the initial inspiration comes persperation. By that I mean a lot of tweaking, re-writing, multiple drafts, exploring all options to make the song the best it can be. Taylor Swift songs in particular are highly crafted by Taylor and her co-writers in Nashville. I’d advise following the link below and reading whatever interests you but I’d definitely recommend:

Songwriting tips + ideas please?
I’m really interested in the indie/alternative/metal genre. I’ve written a few songs, but are there are tips or things I should watch out for when writing?? What are the factors of a indie/alternative/metal song??
My inspirations include:
Kimya Dawson
Paramore
Belle & Sebastian
Incubus
I think it is very important that you don’t start writing a song thinking "I am going to write an indie song".
Write whatever makes you feel good, even if sometimes you look at it and think "damn, that’s kinda gay music.." (happened to me already lol)
Tips:
-Have a cell phone that can record voice and whenever you get a nice melody/idea record it right away! Good ideas can come at any time don’t loose them
-Write your songs alone, and turn of msn, icq or other stuff
-Talk with people about your songs. Get other musicians to listen to them and drop in ideas. Be sure to be open minded about those ideas.
-Don’t try to imitate others, find your own style
Some tips for songwriting and getting the beat and melody to the tune?
I am new to songwriting and getting the full song with the beat and melody down so any tips would be very helpful!
If the lyric is carefully crafted, the rhythm should naturally fit. Often the melody will follow naturally. Try speaking the lyric out loud to see how you say it, that is probably how you would sing it. Conversely, if you have written a melody and know what you are feeling, you can craft the words to fit the melody. Invest in a thesaurus and check this site for musical forms. Best wishes.
Songwriting? And lyrics in general… :)?
I’ve recently started singing and also writing some music.
I’m inspired by people that write amazing songs such as NeYo and Livvi Franc and have an interest more in the RnB side of music
But i just want to know, i’ve got ideas of what to write songs about but i can never put it together, does it just come to you? or do you start off with the beat? start off with a chorus?
thank you x
I usually start writing from an idea. Initially it may flow out from listening to a beat or just spitting out a melody and lyrics, but almost always the song really starts to take shape once the chorus or hook is discovered. Remember that the hook is where the first verse is headed and it tells you where the rest of the song is going to go. After saying that I’ll finish by saying that everybody finds their own way and there is no wrong way to write a song. Good luck!!!
